The Human Resources (HR) function is such an important function and it is unfortunately ignored by many, especially small businesses in South Africa. Perhaps it is because HR is seen as a function that only hires and fires? Yet, the HR function is much broader than just hiring and firing.

Michael Zroback warns us in one of his articles about “The risks of not having human resources: five areas that you are risking”. He mentioned the following five:

  1. Talent Management ad Succession Planning
  2. Employee Training and Development
  3. Regulatory Compliance
  4. Determining appropriate pay
  5. Ethics and Tone at the top

I must admit that I have seen HR done badly and I think those responsible have given HR a bad reputation. This has resulted in some people and businesses not seeing any value in the HR function. Here as also some outdated perceptions about HR as described by workforce.com:

  1. HR doesn’t contribute to the bottom line
  2. HR makes things harder than they need to be
  3. HR primarily focuses on admin tasks and do not have a strategic function

Now this may still be very true in some business, it is however not supposed to be like this; unless this is what is expected by your business leaders.

The Human Resources function has evolved significantly over the years from being the social workers of the business, focusing only the problems that people had, to HR being true business partners. The Modern HR specialist or business partner is as concerned as the CEO and CFO, with the success of the business, not only from a people perspective, but they are also concerned with the long-term sustainability of the business. This includes but is not limited to the profitability of the business.

The Human Resources function includes mainly the following, please note this list is by no means exhaustive:

  • Recruitment and selection
  • HR governance, including labour relations, policies and procedures, contracting, etc.
  • Learning & Development
  • Performance Management
  • Organizational Design and Development
  • Remuneration Management (salary benchmarks, bonus structures, etc.)
  • Payroll
  • Benefits and rewards
  • Talent Management
  • Succession Management
  • Analytics and Data Management
  • Diversity Management
